MICHAELA’S WOODS
16.9 acres off of Appleton Avenue
Hamilton

Gift of Mark S. and Andrea L. Arratoon

In December of 2004, the Land Trust received the generous donation of nearly 17 acres of land in Hamilton from Mark Aratoon and his family. The property is located at the end of Appleton Avenue and is adjacent to the Land Trust’s Taft Woods reservation. Together, these two properties comprise over 20 acres of protected open space. The Aratoons requested that the reservation be called Michaela’s Woods, in honor of their daughter, Michaela, who spent many hours playing there. Possessing both upland and wetland areas, the property is in a natural, wooded condition.

After an especially rainy spring, Michaela’s Woods shimmers in a verdant summer palette.

Then with more sunlight green mounts, gathers, swells, and explodes, its onrushing upthrusting fibrous joy cavorting from the ground, yellow-green to butter the soul’s bread with. Down from the verdant twigs of the trees, green descends toward green uprising, dog’s-ear leaves first unwrapping their tender delicate early edible green, pale
and lemony Spring-leaf green, later to darken or weather
into the green-shutter leaves of August.
